“Free Rice” is helping the UN feed people with a unique concept that involves improving the vocabulary of players who often mutter words like “this is addictive/fun/silly/a great idea.”
Free Rice funds its project through money from advertisers that include Mac, Time/Life, iTunes, Radisson, and American Express, just to name a few.. The site presents users with vocabulary words, the objective is to pick the correct definition. For each word you get right, they donate money for 10 grains of rice to feed people through the UN.
Here is what Free Rice says about their project :
FreeRice is a sister site of the world poverty site, Poverty.com.
FreeRice has two goals:
1. Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.
This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on this site.
Whether you are CEO of a large corporation or a street child in a poor country, improving your vocabulary can improve your life. It is a great investment in yourself.
Perhaps even greater is the investment your donated rice makes in hungry human beings, enabling them to function and be productive. Somewhere in the world, a person is eating rice that you helped provide. Thank you.
Our consensus is that it’s a great idea and a great way to kill time!
Go to Free Rice.com and improve your vocabulary, and help provide rice for those who can’t provide for themselves.

The Washington Post reported yesterday:
“Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Stephen L. Johnson yesterday denied California’s petition to limit greenhouse gas emissions from cars and trucks, overruling the unanimous recommendation of the agency’s legal and technical staffs.”
Johnson attempted to justify the decision by saying:
“The Bush administration is moving forward with a clear national solution, not a confusing patchwork of state rules, to reduce America’s climate footprint from vehicles,” Johnson said. “President Bush and Congress have set the bar high, and, when fully implemented, our federal fuel-economy standard will achieve significant benefits by applying to all 50 states.”
He went on to say that he felt like the national policy was enough and better” than a patchwork of state policies.” Did someone tell Mr.Johnson he ha to choose, and could only implement ONE initiative to reduce emissions? Hi comments were narrow minded and have effectively slowed down the efforts of many to stop and/or reduce green house gas emissions.
Others in the EPA advised Johnson not to deny the proposal …at the veryleast because it would most certainly result in a lawsuit, but ultimately because the proposal is necessary for a comprehensive stance on reducing emissions. California, which is allowed under the Clean Air Act to set its own air pollution policies as long as it obtains an exemption from the federal government, had not been denied a waiver in the law’s 37-year history. Environmental advocates and state representatives have already set the wheels in motion to begin he process of suing the EPA.

The GBB will provide a vital link between conscious consumers and green businesses via a multi-media social network. The forum will encourage a paradigm shift for businesses to become transparent and conscious consumers to take an active roll in leading the way towards a more sustainable and positive future.

green business: company that is both socially and environmentally responsible.
We are trying to determine what issues are most important to conscious consumers.
These questions are open to anyone who considers the impact of the the products they buy or the companies they support.
Feel free to elaborate on this topic…
Thank you in advance for your taking time to share
1. What are the deciding factors outside of standard shopping criteria (price, quality, etc) that weigh most heavily when on you/your customers (based on feedback) when deciding whether to shop at a/your store?
2. Is it enough for a business to SAY they are selling fair trade or organic products or do they need to prove it…and if so how?
3. Does it matter if the business is a member of trade organizations (like OTA, HIA, FTF)?
4. Do you as a customer or do your customers ask questions about certifications, how/where products are produced, etc.? What are the most common questions asked?
